It was warm, beautiful and all the
lemon trees were blooming all over the hillsides. If you have never
smelled citrus trees blooming - it is one of the most intense perfumes
you have ever smelled. The towns, the coastline was mythic, as if we had
dropped into an, um... Italian Riviera......
We took great hikes, a side trip
to Pompeii, visited all the little coastal towns by boat (except for the
Isle of Capri- ugh.....I think of Paris Hilton) , ate seafood like kings every night and we stayed
drunk on red wine and Lemoncello for 6 days....

S O R R E N T O
The town was filled with English
tourists on holiday. Ever so proper they are, in their holiday resort
clothes, suits and ties in the evening, chiffon and high heels, sitting
at cafe tables, upright, saying or rather, not saying a word to each other with their
English lips and teeth, as they drank their Campari and sodas.
Staring straight ahead, rigidly, looking at the blank wall across the
street, having a perfectly marvelous British vacation.
Mostly they were
north Londoners or Cockney or from Bristol or some other town. There
they were on a proper holiday, having clawed their way up to the
middle class. God bless them everyone, but we decided to hang out with
the drunken beer-drinking German crowd. Rowdy, boisterous and lots of
fun.

We enjoyed our hydro-plane boat trip up the
coast to Positano and Amalfi (and a bus trip up
the hill to Ravello). In Amalfi we stumbled into
a big fat Italian Wedding on the steps of the
Moorish and Byzantine-flavored Cathedral with
the steep stairway. Very funny, check the
pictures.

People, why did you build an Eden next
to an active volcano?
I highly recommend a book by
Robert Harris, Pompeii, a number one best-seller on the New York
Times list. What an eye opener.........
